Two new treatments for impotence

One of them, the Levitra family, is being investigated by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for possible negative side effects. It is hoped that the combination of the two drugs – called L-type phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors – could be a potential treatment for impotence.

The other, called Cialis, is being studied for potential use as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Both drugs work by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow when a man is sexually stimulated. “It’s been found to be effective for impotence in men who take Levitra,” said Dr. Emily Carter, a urologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Both drugs are approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men between the ages of 18 and 74. They include Levitra and Cialis. “When we talk about impotence, we don’t talk about erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Cartall.

Dr. Cartall is director of urology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She said that while both drugs work similarly to sexual stimulation, they are not the same. “We talk about erectile dysfunction, but we don’t talk about impotence. It’s not a disease or a disease-specific thing. It’s a symptom.”

The FDA is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of both drugs. The trial is expected to be completed by April 30.
